Biography

Marie-Alexandra Coste is project manager in the Local Governments, Housing and Urban Development Division in charge of operations at the French Agency for Development (AFD) in Paris, since December 2016. She worked for several years at Caisse des Dépôts, a French public investment bank, on the sustainability and innovation strategy in the field of urban development and local policies. She participated in the incubation program for innovative and entrepreneurial projects (“Lab cdc”), in the housing and local development fields.

She is currently dealing with a portfolio of urban operations in Tunisia and Ethiopia.

Urban renewal: Let’s combine elephants and mice!

Large-scale urban projects have shown their limits and yet they continue to crystalize a vision of the ideal city. At a time when the challenges mainly lie in improving what already exists, new approaches make cities a Common by putting residents back at the center of their fabric. Complementarity needs to be sought between heavy operations and bottom-up initiatives for the benefit of a more sustainable city.
