Mamadou Diouf is a Senegalese historian and specialist in colonial history and religion in Senegal. He is the author of a postgraduate thesis on the Kingdom of Cayor, defended at the University of Paris I in 1980. He started his career as a lecturer-researcher at Cheikh Anta Diop University, where he headed the Research and Documentation Department of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) from 1991 to 1999, when he went to live in the USA. He subsequently lectured at Michigan University and took part in the research of the Department of African and Afro-American Studies. Since 2007, he has headed the Institute for African Studies at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (New York).
