Guillaume Chiron trained as an economist (Centre for Studies and Research on International Development – CERDI) and joined AFD in 1993, where he has held several operational positions. He has held positions in both the network (Mauritania, Haiti, Mozambique and Brazil) and at headquarters. He has been a biodiversity project manager since 2010 and manages a portfolio of projects for biodiversity protection and natural resources management in Africa (Madagascar, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritania), Asia (China) and the South Pacific. His activity includes working on sustainable financing, in particular conservation trust funds and biodiversity offsets.

Innovating to protect nature: offset, a new source of financing?

The limited resources of national budgets and Official Development Assistance will not be sufficient to preserve habitats and key species in the South. Other sources of financing are consequently required. It has become essential to mobilize the private sector more in conservation trust funds and via offset mechanisms. This is how we will be able to limit the biodiversity loss caused by human activities and reconcile economic growth and nature conservation.
