Gérard Payen has been working for nearly 30 years to resolve water-related issues all over the world.
Today, he works on mobilizing the international community on global water issues, mainly as Member of the United Nations Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) and as Honorary President of AquaFed, the international federation of private water services operators. He is also a Board Member of the INTERNATIONAL WATER ASSOCIATION, the global association of water professionals.
In France, he is Vice-President of ASTEE, the association of French public and private water professionals, member of the FRENCH WATER PARTNERSHIP, an association for French actors concerned by water issues outside France, a Board Member of the WATER ACADEMY, and member of the ACADEMY OF TECHNOLOGIES.
He was astounded by the number of misconceptions over the nature of water-related problems, which hamper public authorities in their decision-making, and published a book in 2013 to refute these preconceived ideas.
Previously, after having been on the Management Board at Degremont, a global group specialized in water treatment, he headed all the Water activities of the group called Lyonnaise des Eaux, then Suez, and turned it into the world leader for drinking water and sanitation services (120 million people supplied with water every day) under the name Ondeo, today Suez Environnement. During this period, thanks to companies under his responsibility, 7 million people have gained access to safe drinking water in developing countries.
